LOCATION: YARRA 5000/04.09 E21900 N20100
Tate Reserve on the western side of the Merri Creek at the end of Grant Street.
ACCESS: Merri Path (western side of Creek), Grant Street.
OWNERSHIP & MUNICIPALITY: Public Land, City of Coburg.
SITE DESCRIPTION: A broad, shallow depression formerly with a swampy base is a higher level channel of the Merri Creek. Between this channel and the present channel is a rounded hill which is an outlier of basalt that has been isolated by the migration eastward and incision of the creek.
SIGNIFICANCE RATING: LOCAL
The site is an example of an earlier, less incised channel of the Merri Creek. Due to the extensive modifications to the creek course in the Metropolitan area, it is one of the few places where earlier higher level channels may still be seen.
SITE SENSITIVITY, THREATS, POTENTIAL UTILISATION
CLASS 3. The site has been substantially disturbed and partly regraded but the general form of the higher level channel is still visible. The site has been extensively planted and as tree growth advances, the form of the channel will become disguised.
