Litter clean up groupA big shout out to all the wonderful community groups and individuals within the Merri catchment who are doing their bit to remove litter from our streets, parks and waterways and preventing it from going into Port Phillip Bay.

In April 12 2021, volunteers from Lateral Food Corp, Dr Bronners All One charity & partners cleared up more than 12 kgs of litter in just over an hour on Merri Creek in East Brunswick. Most of the litter was broken glass, plastic bags, plastic food packets, macro plastics, coffee cups and yes some face masks.

In May, Zara and her team of fellow students from the University of Melbourne collected 13kg of rubbish after just one hour - all within 50 metres south of the footbridge over Merri Creek between Sumner Reserve, Brunswick East and Merri Park, Northcote.

A number of groups undertake regular litter clean ups in the Merri catchment: the Friends of Merri Creek, the St George’s Rd Bike Path group, the Friends of Merri Park and the Friends of Edwardes Lake. Thanks to all these groups for their continued efforts.

All the information on types of litter and amounts is uploaded to the LitterWatch Vic data portal that anyone can access once registered.

If your business, community group or school is interested in planning a morning (or afternoon) Litter Clean Up on the Merri, contact .

Thanks to the Cities of Darebin, Moreland, Whittlesea and Yarra for their funding to MCMC to enable support for litter cleanups.

Wurundjeri panel - featureSee a web version of these fabulous panels which celebrate the outstanding community achievement since 1975 in transforming Merri Creek from a weed-smothered drain to a much-loved waterway running through a bushland corridor: fronts of panels (17MB file); backs of panels (9MB file).

The two metre size panels were originally displayed at libraries and other public places throughout the Merri Creek catchment over 16 months until late 2016, in celebration of MCMC's 25th Anniversary.
