Merri Creek Management Committee

MCMC led two nights of frog discovery along Edgars Creek and the Edwardes Lake wetland in Reservoir in October and November 2017. The excursions included educational games such as a frog quiz, waterbug discovery and frog bingo. In total 40 participants heard 11 frogs calling from two local species: the Pobblebonk and the Common Eastern Froglet. All frog calls were recorded as part of Melbourne Water's citizen science Frog Census and uploaded via the Frog Census app.

Information about local frog species and populations helps ecologists find where there are gaps in local populations and where frogs are doing well, so these conditions can be replicated elsewhere. You might even rediscover a frog species that has never been recorded at a certain spot! Frogs are bio-indicators, meaning their absence can be a sign of water quality problems and vice versa. The best way to identify frog species and populations is by listening to their calls, recording them and uploading the frog call information onto the Melbourne Water Frog Census app.
