Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC) is delighted to have received $13,186 from The Hazel and Arthur Bruce Bequest for a project that will provide Homes for micro bats and pardalotes on the Merri. This project will be rolled out in Merri Park Northcote during 2019-20. Keep an eye out for community events related to this initiative by subscribing to our events notifications. We will run a community information session about the project and offer a series of training events for volunteers to monitor the success of the nest boxes.
We also congratulate our member group, Friends of Merri Creek, for success with three grant applications for which MCMC staff provided technical assistance.
$20,338 from the Port Phillip Bay Fund for the project Sediment Slow Down on Merri and Edgar's Creeks. This project will improve bank stability and vegetation structure along a 500m stretch of Merri and Edgars Creeks in Coburg. It will also endeavour to reduce the impact of rubbish and erosion. MCMC staff will help implement the project during 2019-20.
$6,125 from Darebin Council's Community Grants to the Friends of Merri Park, a sub-group of the Friends of Merri Creek. This grant will enable the group to run two planting events near Merri Park Wetland in Northocte in 2020. One of the events will be with community volunteers and the other with Northcote High School students. The school is located next to Merri Park.
$1861.50 from the Australian Government Volunteer Grants Program. This will fund the purchase of barbecues, mattocks and tools, used at Friends of Merri Creek community events.
Our assistance in the preparation of these grant applications is part of our support for volunteer groups caring for Merri waterways. Our Council members - Darebin, Hume, Mitchell, Moreland, Whittlesea and Yarra - provide annual funding for MCMC to provide this support.
