Friends Groups

The Friends of Merri Creek & The Friends of Wallan Creek

The Friends of Merri Creek and the Friends of Wallan Creek are independent voluntary community groups that play an important role in the Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC). Together, these two Friends groups nominate a total of seven representatives to the MCMC Committee of Management, and have input to MCMC and its policies and are involved in works, activities and planning along the Merri Creek and its important tributaries including Wallan Creek, Edgars Creek and Malcolm Creek. .

The Friends of Merri Creek

replantingThe Friends of Merri Creek share the Merri Creek Management Committee goal to protect and restore the Merri Creek Parklands. Accordingly, members are offered the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, including:

  • Revegetation and bushland management;
  • Waterway clean-up and litter control;
  • Campaigns on key issues, such as: native grasslands;
  • Publications and newsletters;
  • Walks, talks and tours;
  • Water quality testing.

Anyone can apply to become a Friend of Merri Creek and new members are welcome. Members receive a regular newsletter including information on current issues and forthcoming activities. Friends of Merri Creek member groups include the Friends of Edgars Creek, the Friends of Malcolm Creek and the Merri Edgars Creek Confluence Area Restoration Group (MECCARG).

The Friends of Wallan Creek

The Friends of Wallan Creek work to restore the Wallan Creek, an upper tributary of the Merri Creek which flows through the town of Wallan, north of Melbourne. For more information click here

Other Friends Groups

There are a number of other friends groups working in parts of the Merri Creek catchment.

  • The Friends of Edwardes Lake are committed to caring for Edwardes Lake, a lake on the Edgars Creek in Reservoir.
  • The Friends of Westgarthtown in Thomastown brings together those who care for Westgarthtown's German/Wendish heritage and its unique architectural and landscape assets.

Landcare Groups

There are two Landcare Groups in parts of the upper Merri catchment.

  • The Merriang & District Landcare Group like other Landcare groups has a focus on the questions of sustainability in agriculture, regeneration and protection of the natural environment. Is it a community based non-profit organisation depending on members for their skills, time and enthusiasm.
