Pipeline works at Bakers Rd Coburg North (completed)
A new water pipeline has been laid underneath Merri Creek from Bakers Rd to McMahons Rd Coburg North, which caused a temporary closure to the shared path. These works, including upgrading access to the footbridge across the creek between the roads, were completed on July 25, when there was a community planting at the site.
New shared path near Rushall Station (completed)
A new shared path has been created between Rushall Station and the High St bridge. It was built as part of the Merri Trail Review to provide less gradient and less turns than the previous path. Unfortunately, it meant that some vegetation had to be sacrificed, but there has already been reinstatement plantings funded by the City of Yarra and the Aust Govt Regional Catchment Investment Plan.
New path bridge on pipeline crossing (completed)
Another new water pipeline will be completed in March 2010 starting under Holden St North Fitzroy, then across the creek replacing the current pipeline bridge and continuing under the parklands alongside Merri Parade Northcote. Although the works have temporarily disruptedt he shared path in that area, cyclists will be well compensated by a new path bridge on top of the pipeline to connect with the Capital City Trail. The Victorian Government and Melbourne Water have funded the works which will provide cyclists with an alternative to the on-road route over the St Georges Road bridge and narrow Rushall Station footbridge.
St Georges Rd Roundabout works (completed)
The re-designed lights and roadworks at the St Georges Rd bridge Northcote/Nth Fitzroy was completed in late 2009 to remedy the dangerous roundabout that was there previously.
Melbourne Water's Merri Creek Improvements - North Coburg (postponed)
Melbourne Water' aimed to start major creek improvement works from Queens Pde Fawkner to Carr St North Coburg in the 2009-2010 financial year. However, the cost estimate for the project has now made it unviable for this year. It is hoped that the project can be delivered in the next few years. The project includes the staged removal of most willow trees and woody weeds, followed by plantings, including extensive aquatic vegetation; major work on the Merlynston Creek confluence; and erosion control.
Clifton Hill Rail Project (completed)
The new rail bridge was completed in April 2009 and trains have been running on the new city bound railway track between Clifton Hill and Westgarth Stations since then. The works underneath the bridge were completed by November 2009.
